When I had my first baby, I knew nothing. Like literally nothing. As a matter of fact, I remember thinking that it was absolutely crazy for the nurse at the hospital to let me take the baby home. I was sure that I wouldn’t do everything right. And I didn’t. But for the most part, that baby is almost ready to graduate, and everything has turned out just fine. So take heart, God covers over so many of our parenting mistakes, big and small.
One of my more humorous mistakes, as I look back on life with preschoolers was being over-ambitious with art projects. I’d plan out something awesome, with lots of steps and parts, only for them to lose interest quickly, and then use the supplies to make an astounding mess. I know WAY more about toddlers and preschooler now, after all of my on-the-job training. One thing I’ve learned is to keep it simple, and not to put my vision of things out there for them to copy. It’s best to give them mediums in very small amounts and tiny tools to use them with. We love small brushes and little pipettes for things like this. Q-tips are wonderful for toddler and preschooler dot painting….and disposable! Let them follow their own creative bent and you will be amazed at their work. Remember, with little ones, it’s the process…not the product!
Tonight, we will let them have a little bit of yellow paint, some q-tips and some star stickers. As they listen to the story of Abraham, they can make their own sky art.
And Abram stared into that velveted night sky, and a million, billion, trillion diamond-shimmering stars danced around him, and Abram tried to count all the ways – the thousands and millions and billions of ways – God loved him, and it made him dance in awe with the stars, with God.
For tomorrow…have on hand some baking soda, vinegar, and red and green food coloring! We are going to have some fizzy fun. And we will get our post up early….we had every hope of getting this one out early, but we are singing our own version of the 12 days of Christmas that goes like this: Four vomiting children, Three fussy littles, Two Irish dancers (competing TODAY), one date night cancelled………fa la la la la, la la la la!!!!!!!!!
